About This Vegan Tour

Our vegan tour of Taiwan has endless hiking and biking opportunities. Each day offers the chance to explore nearby beaches, mountains, sea caves, waterfalls, cultural sites and local communities. This vegan tour also includes guided bike tours of Taipei and guided hikes in Yangmingshan National Park and Taroko Gorge National Park.

Taiwan is an island nation rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. Formed by volcanic activity, Taiwan boasts the highest mountains east of the Himalayas. More than 100 peaks rise above 3,000 m (9,842 ft) in elevation. Taiwan’s 23 million inhabitants are members of a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-faith society. What appears to outsiders as a homogenous island is anything but. This complicated, beautiful human tapestry is brought to life on our vegan tour of Taiwan.

Taiwan’s capital city, Taipei, is situated on the banks of the Tamsui River and surrounded on all sides by lush green mountains. Home to famous sites like the Taipei 101 skyscraper and the Zhulinshan Guanyin Temple, this city also features world-class cycling infrastructure. Car-free bike paths traverse the city and connect it to nearby seaside towns and mountain-top villages. Next up is Taroko Gorge National Park, home to the world’s largest marble canyon. The gateway to the park is Hualien City, whose beaches are a great place to rest between hiking Mt. Hehuan and kayaking beneath the Qingshui Cliffs.

More Details

  • Throughout this vegan tour of Taiwan, we will stay in 3-4 star hotels and hot spring inns.

We work diligently with our lodging partners to ensure that not only our meals, but all soaps, shampoos, toiletries and bedding provided are vegan.

  • Guided walking and cycling excursions are offered each day of our vegan tour. Whenever possible, we include the option to participate in other outdoor activities such as surfing, paddle boarding, kite surfing, paragliding, mountain biking, rock climbing, “coasteering,” and many others. These activities are offered in partnership with trusted local guiding companies in each region, and are not included in the tour cost.

  • Hiking Biking Vegan tours are designed to appeal to vegans from all walks of life, not just vegan athletes. We take great pride in designing itineraries that can accommodate vegan travelers of almost any age, fitness or experience level. Are you an experienced hiker wanting to spend 6 hours on the trail each day? We’ve got you covered. Are you a casual cyclist who’d rather spend your mornings pedaling and your afternoons curled up with a good book? We’re here for you, too.

While most of the cycling portion of this vegan tour is along rivers and relatively flat, some days will be hilly. Therefore, e-bikes are recommended for less-experienced cyclists.

  • We know how difficult it can be to find vegan restaurants—or just vegan options, full stop—in rural and remote areas, especially when traveling in a foreign country. That’s why we’ve done all of that on-the-ground research for you. We hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much vegan variety there is to be found, when you know where to look.

HBV tours include 3 vegan meals per day, up to a limit of $50 USD per day per traveler.

  • Solo travelers are welcome on every Hiking Biking Vegan tour. The single supplement—an additional fee for a private room—is not charged in cases when a solo traveler opts to share accommodation with another solo traveler of the same gender. Private rooms are usually—but not always—available each night of a tour. Availability is often limited in rural and remote areas, such as national parks.

  • The base price of this vegan tour includes all lodging, meals, transportation and gear rental required for a Hiking Tour. Cycling and E-bike Tours include the cost of bike rental. Gear rentals and guiding services for kayaking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, etc. are paid directly to our local partners and are not included in the base price.

We use a “base price + add ons” pricing strategy in order to 1) make our tours accessible to vegan travelers with different budgets and 2) to appeal to vegan travelers of all backgrounds with a broad range of recreational interests.

  • October is the best time to visit Taiwan. The scorching summer heat and typhoon rains have given way to clear skies and pleasant daytime temperatures. Autumn colors can be seen at higher elevations.

Our tour of Taiwan travels to several different climate zones. Much of the tour will be spent near sea level, but we will be hiking in mountainous areas, reaching elevations of 3,416 m (11,207 ft). At high altitudes, the weather can shift quickly.

Expect a broad range of temperatures and weather patterns, and pack accordingly. Always pack a mid-layer and a rain jacket, as well as comfortable shoes/boots for hiking.
