About This Vegan Tour

Our vegan tour of Kyoto and Tokyo has endless hiking and biking opportunities. Each day offers the chance to explore nearby beaches, mountains, waterfalls, cultural sites and local communities. This vegan includes a visit to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, cycling along riverside bike paths and hiking to mountain-top Shinto shrines.

Kyoto and Tokyo are very popular destinations. Our tour is designed to get you out of the overcrowded tourist areas and give you the chance to experience what these cities are actually like. We accomplish this by doing what the locals do: walking, cycling, and riding the train. Both Kyoto and Tokyo have rivers that connect them to the mountains, the sea and the countryside in between. This vegan tour takes you along riverside bike paths, connecting you to areas far from Tokyo city center. Kyoto is also surrounded by mountains on three sides, with an incredible network of hiking trails that lead to mountain-top shrines, hot springs, and panoramic views.

The capstone of this vegan adventure tour is a visit to Mount Fuji, located in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. We will ride bikes along the Five Fuji Lakes, visit traditional thatch-roofed villages, and hike in the hills above Ashinoko caldera lake. And of course, a vegan tour of Japan wouldn’t be complete without copious samplings of vegan sushi, tempura, and many more local dishes.

More Details

  • Throughout this vegan tour of Japan, we will stay in 3-4 star hotels and hot spring inns.

We work diligently with our lodging partners to ensure that not only our meals, but all soaps, shampoos, toiletries and bedding provided are vegan.

  • Guided walking and cycling excursions are offered each day of our vegan tour. Whenever possible, we include the option to participate in other outdoor activities such as surfing, paddle boarding, kite surfing, paragliding, mountain biking, rock climbing, canyoning, and many others. These activities are offered in partnership with trusted local guiding companies in each region, and are not included in the tour cost.

  • Hiking Biking Vegan tours are designed to appeal to vegans from all walks of life, not just vegan athletes. We take great pride in designing itineraries that can accommodate vegan travelers of almost any age, fitness or experience level. Are you an experienced hiker wanting to spend 6 hours on the trail each day? We’ve got you covered. Are you a casual cyclist who’d rather spend your mornings pedaling and your afternoons curled up with a good book? We’re here for you, too.

While most of the cycling portion of this vegan tour is along rivers and relatively flat, some days will be hilly. Therefore, e-bikes are recommended for most riders.

  • We know how difficult it can be to find vegan restaurants—or just vegan options, full stop—in rural and remote areas, especially when traveling in a foreign country. That’s why we’ve done all of that on-the-ground research for you. We hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much vegan variety there is to be found, when you know where to look.

  • Solo travelers are welcome on every Hiking Biking Vegan tour. The single supplement—an additional fee for a private room—is not charged in cases when a solo traveler opts to share accommodation with another solo traveler of the same gender. Private rooms are usually—but not always—available each night of a tour. Availability is often limited in rural and remote areas, such as national parks.

  • The base price of this vegan tour includes all lodging, meals, transportation and gear rental required for a Hiking Tour. Cycling and E-bike Tours include the cost of bike rental. Gear rentals and guiding services for kayaking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, etc. are paid directly to our local partners and are not included in the base price.

We use a “base price + add ons” pricing strategy in order to 1) make our tours accessible to vegan travelers with different budgets and 2) to appeal to vegan travelers of all backgrounds with a broad range of recreational interests.

  • Early October is an excellent time to explore Kyoto and Tokyo. The sweltering heat and pummeling rain of typhoon season have come to an end. Nights are cool and daytime temperatures are pleasantly warm. The autumn ‘koyo’ colors are beginning to appear in the nearby mountains.

Our tour of the Kansai and Kantō regions travels to several different climate zones. Much of the tour will be spent near sea level, but we will visit elevations as high as 1,345 m (4,413 ft). Expect a broad range of temperatures and weather patterns, and pack accordingly. Always pack a mid-layer and a rain jacket, as well as comfortable shoes/boots for hiking.
