Daily Itinerary

  • Welcome to South Korea!

Our vegan bike tour begins in Jeju City. Located on the north shore of the island, Jeju City is accessible by plane via Jeju International Airport (CJU) or by ferry from Busan. Your guide (that’s me!) will meet you at either location and transport you to our hotel.

Our tour officially begins over dinner. If you arrive earlier in the day, feel free to explore Jeju City on your own.

Your PDF itinerary will include directions to the city’s many highlights, including the Sanji Lighthouse, Sarabong Park, Yongdam Gorge, and the Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum. A selection of vegan-approved restaurants and coffee shops will also be provided.

After dinner, we’ll rest up and prepare for the week of cycling that lies ahead!

    Meals: Dinner (100% vegan)

  • Leaving Jeju City behind us, we set off west to explore Jeju’s north shore. Along the way, we get our first taste of the never-ending ocean views that will be a hallmark of the tour.

Jeju Island is just one of 60+ islands that make up the Jeju archipelago. Biyangdo, the newest addition to this volcanic island chain, will be visible as we make our way past l beautiful beaches and friendly seaside villages.

We arrive at our destination in time for lunch. While many beaches on Jeju can get overcrowded, Hyeopjae Beach remains an overlooked gem. The waters are turquoise and calm, perfect for both swimming and watching the sunset.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

    Distance: 40 km (25 mi)

  • Today’s ride takes us to the first of many awe-inspiring peaks on Jeju: Sanbang Mountain. This trachytic tuff lava dome is surrounded by open plains, making it visible from all directions. A steep staircase from the temple at its base awaits anyone with energy to spare after our morning bike ride.

Once we’ve arrived, feel free to explore the numerous nature reserves. For the more curious traveler, there is also the unforgettable, government-sponsored Museum of Sex and Health, full of provocative outdoor statuary for anyone not prone to blushing.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

    Distance: 48 km (30 mi)

  • Today’s ride is the shortest of the entire tour, giving us plenty of time to visit the many noteworthy sites along the way.

Jungmun Beach is the epicenter of tourism on Jeju, home to many upscale resorts and frequented by many Korean celebrities. If that’s not your speed, don’t worry. We also stop to appreciate two stunning waterfalls, Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjaeyeon, as well as the dramatic Jusangjeolli Cliffs. This stretch of coastline is what put Jeju on the map.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

    Distance: 34 km (21 mi)

  • Today is an optional rest day.

Those looking to relax can explore Seogwipo City or cool off under one of the three nearby waterfalls that cascade directly into the sea.

Those looking to see more of the island are welcome to join your guide for a tour of Hallasan National Park. Hallasan is the volcanic peak at the heart of Jeju Island. Even if you’re not up for a hike to the summit, there will be plenty of nature to explore that doesn’t require navigating steep trails.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

  • After an enjoyable break from our bikes, we get back in the saddle and tackle our longest ride of the tour. This stretch is relatively flat, and our destination is well worth the effort.

Seongsan Ilchulbang is one of the most photographed areas on Jeju Island, and for good reason. The sunrise over this volcanic outcrop, with its alien coastline, is simply breathtaking. We also have the opportunity to explore nearby Udo Island, if our day of riding hasn’t quite tired us out.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

    Distance: 64 km (40 mi)

  • If there is one thing you must experience while visiting Jeju, it is waking up to see the sunrise over Seongsan Ilchulbang. Next, we catch the ferry to Udo Island to see if it lives up to the hype of being “South Korea’s Scotland” (my Scottish sources begrudgingly agree that it does).

Today’s ride begins after lunch. Riders have a short and a long option, depending on how they feel after yesterday’s ride. Option 1: a short ride to Gimnyeong Beach, followed by a shuttle ride into Jeju City. Option 2: a longer rider all the way to Jeju City, and bragging rights to say they circumnavigated all of Jeju Island by bicycle.

Whichever distance you choose, we’ll celebrate a week of achievements and memories over a well-earned meal.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (100% vegan)

    Distance: 29 - 57 km (18 - 35 mi)

  • Our vegan bike tour of South Korea's Jeju Island ends after a final breakfast together.

Guests are invited to join their guide for one final adventure: a foray to the Geomunoreum lava tubes, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases the raw power of Jeju's volcanos.

If you are leaving Jeju today, your guide will coordinate with you to ensure that you reach either the airport or ferry shuttle in time for your departure.

We look forward to having you join us for another vegan adventure soon!

Accommodation

The accommodation we use on this tour is a mixture of family-run B&Bs and small hotels that cater to the needs of cyclists. Rooms are shared; single-traveler rooms are available for an additional fee. All rooms have access to a private bathroom.

We make every effort to choose locations as close as possible to the village or town center, so that we can more easily explore local communities.

Solo Travelers

Solo travelers make up a large share of Hiking Biking Vegan guests and are encouraged to join any and all of our vegan adventures. Our tour prices are based on double occupancy, due to the limited accommodation options in many of our destinations. You will be paired with another solo traveler of the same gender. Private rooms are often, though not always, available, for an additional fee.

Weather & Climate

Early October on Jeju Island offers the best cycling weather. Daily temperatures rarely rise above 26°C (79°F), dropping to 18°C (65°F) in the evening.

While the weather along Jeju’s coast can be quite balmy, temperatures and weather patterns can change dramatically with elevation. Come prepared for colder temperatures if planning to join us for our summit hike of Hallasan.

Cycling Fitness

The main focus of this vegan bike tour is sight-seeing. It is meant to showcase the fascinating history, natural beauty and local hospitality of Jeju Island, South Korea. The terrain is relatively flat, and distances moderate. A support van will be available at all times, should any rider require assistance.

Casual cyclists are encouraged to ride e-bikes. Experienced cyclists riding standard bikes should have no issue. Riders looking for longer distances or steeper inclines will have the opportunity to choose a more active route on most days of the tour.

Getting to Jeju Island

This vegan bike tour starts in Jeju City, which is easily accessible by air via Jeju International Airport (CJU).

If you are arriving on Jeju by different means, such as the ferry from Busan, and would like advice on how to get here, let us know and we will help you to plan your journey.
